Keene, NH – Piggly Wiggly supermarkets and C&S Charities, Inc. are proud to announce that they donated $25,000 from their South Carolina Golf Classic to the Lowcountry Food Bank for its BackPack Buddies program. The event, which was held on October 28, hosted more than 100 golfers at RiverTowne Country Club in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina.

John Owens, Vice President of Marketing and Merchandising for C&S Retail Services, thanked everyone who supported the event at a breakfast reception held at the club. John said, “The success of the event is really the result of the independent Piggly Wiggly owners, vendors, suppliers, and employees coming together to help a wonderful local cause. Together, we can do great things.”

Sponsors included:

  • Event Sponsors: Coca-Cola Consolidated, Snyder’s/Lance
  • Cart Sponsor: CSM Bakery Solutions

Pat Walker, President & CEO of the Lowcountry Food Bank, expressed her gratitude for the generosity of the Golf Classic sponsors. She said, “We are thankful for the presence of C&S Wholesale Grocers ‎and the Piggly Wiggly supermarkets in our community and for their support of the Lowcountry Food Bank in our mission to lead the fight against hunger in our community. The commitment of C&S and Piggly Wiggly to community service and eliminating hunger, aligns perfectly with our mission. We are both in the business of feeding people and, together, we can make sure that no child in our community goes to bed hungry!”

The donation supports the Lowcountry Food Bank’s mission to lead South Carolina’s fight against hunger in the state’s ten coastal communities. Locally, a staggering 1 in 4 children experiences hunger. Many kids rely on free or reduced meals offered at school and experience a food gap on weekends or when their schools are closed. The Lowcountry Food Bank’s BackPack Buddies program provides children with nutritious, kid-friendly food to take home for the weekend. The program is active in 40 schools and distributes more than 3,200 backpacks every week.

The Food Bank is a proud member of the Feeding America network and operates from distribution centers in Charleston, Myrtle Beach, and Yemassee, SC.

Inspired by the success of this event, Piggly Wiggly and C&S Charities are partnering to make the South Carolina Golf Classic an annual event. The next South Carolina Golf Classic is tentatively scheduled for October 27, 2017.
